The skills AI cannot do are creativity and positions that require interpersonal skills. It can collect the creative works of others, but it isn’t capable of originating innovative thoughts and ideas. These are areas parents and teachers need to focus upon. This calls for a shift from testing for recall to application of new information creatively. By understanding the basics of AI and machine learning, children can develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.
According to The Neuron: “The reality is: AI will impact some jobs more than others. Researchers from Penn, NYU, and Princeton developed a method called AI Occupational Exposure (AIOE) to pinpoint the professions most exposed to AI. Here’s the biggest finding: the most exposed industries are high-paying white-collar ones: legal, investment, business, and insurance. The econ majors drool over.“

Many schools are ahead of the game by teaching robotics. This will offer them exciting possibilities for future careers. When my children were in third grade their teacher challenged them to find a problem and create an item that could solve it. Robotics offers solutions that were not possible in the 1980’s. My daughter came up with a wheelchair that had an apparatus that helped users navigate curbs. What challenges could robotics serve. My grandson is deeply into robotics and created an automatic toilet flusher. His Halloween pumpkin could take off its face.
Parents can nurture creativity by encouraging their children to find solutions for those things that challenge them. One area that will continue to expand is the APP business. Creative students will examine challenges and develop APPs that will solve them. Two former students just created an App for teens who are dealing with health issues. After interviewing several patients they discovered that they don’t always share their feelings. The APP allows the patients to record their feelings during the course of the day. They will be notified randomly to record what they are thinking about. This will help them monitor their morale. Writing about their challenges is a way of releasing the tension related to holding the emotions and feeling inside. The developer of the Dear Me App, Rohan Soni and the DearMe instagram, Saara Dang, are high schoolers using their creativity to solve a challenge. The Dear Me App would be helpful for all teens.
Let’s promote more of this. Children are never too young to come up with a solution.
Ask your children what challenges they are facing. Then ask them how they can solve it.
